Postdoctoral researcher - gastrointestinal microbiota: Sweden

Örebro University has an opening  for a postdoctoral researcher in medicine at the School of Medical Sciences.

Duties and responsibilities
Duties and responsibilities mainly consist of research within the project Diet, intestinal barrier function and inflammation. The postdoctoral researcher will conduct a diet intervention study on individuals with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Special focus will be on dietary fibres and how these impact intestinal permeability, the composition and functioning of the gastrointestinal microbiota, and inflammation in subjects with IBS, since an increased intestinal permeability recently has been reported in relation to IBS.

Duties and responsibilities also involve contributing to new research applications within the bounds of the research field in question.

The postdoctoral researcher is expected to spend at least three per cent of their working hours on public engagement activities. Some teaching may also be included.

Qualifications
Those qualified for the appointment as a postdoctoral researcher are applicants who have obtained a doctoral degree in a relevant subject or have a degree from abroad deemed to correspond to a doctoral degree. The doctoral degree shall have been awarded no more than three years prior to the application deadline. If special grounds exist, candidates who have obtained their doctoral degree prior to that may also be considered. Such grounds may comprise leave of absence due to illness, parental leave, clinical duties, an elected position in a trade union, or other similar circumstances.

To be considered for the position, expertise on intestinal function, microbiology or immunology is required.

Assessment criteria
Particular importance shall be attached to the qualities enabling the candidate to contribute to the future development of both research and education. The candidate’s demonstrated ability and desire to pursue an academic career are also of significance, as are their proficiency and suitability in cooperating with other members of staff and contributing to the development of the department’s activities.

In the assessment of suitable candidates, particular attention will be paid to their experience of laboratory work within molecular biology with a focus on intestinal physiology and microbiota; their experience of clinical studies/good clinical practice; as well as their skills in communicating with patients and partners within the project. Academic presentation and writing skills in English are particularly desirable. Great attention will also be paid to personal characteristics, the ability to work independently and a proven track record of cooperating well with others.

Information
The position is for a fixed term of two years with possibility of extension. The starting date is as soon as possible. The salary depends on the successful candidate’s qualifications and experience.
