Delivering a Reimagined FEMS: Reinventing meetings and reshaping journals

15-01-2026

In 2025, the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS) successfully delivered its reinvented and reimagined biannual Congress & Exhibition. FEMS MICRO Milan 2025 was innovative and experimental, and allowed the best parts of bringing together colleagues from across the world to take centre stage.

In 2026, FEMS turns that energy to its journals portfolio: strengthening the key elements that make them important in today’s research landscape. The FEMS journals are not-for-profit and run by dedicated active microbiologists. The journals publish trustworthy peer reviewed science, and FEMS is ensuring that sound microbiology research from all fields can always find a home within its portfolio.

This year will see a renewed focus on supporting the next generation of microbiologists. The portfolio will see several upgrades in 2026: fresh new looks, refined scopes, training resources for publishing and professional development, and some new faces involved in the journals. So, be sure to follow FEMS on social media and through our newsletters and website to find out more as it happens.

January 2026 sees FEMS saying a big thank you to the Editors-in-Chief, the editorial team, and the reviewers that have all served on Pathogens and Disease, which will be folded in to our other journals. All of the Pathogens and Disease editors and reviewers are invited to add their strength to other journals in our portfolio.

We also extend a huge thank you to all those who choose to publish with us. Our journals cover the full breadth of microbiology research, and FEMS papers on the topics of pathogen microbiology and infectious diseases are warmly welcomed in FEMS Microbiology Letters, FEMS Microbiology Reviews, FEMS Microbes, and microLife.

Antonio Ventosa, FEMS President, said: “We know that our committed editors and authors are key to FEMS making the difference that it does to the microbiology community. We thank both current and past editors and authors for their contributions over the years.”

Elise Kuurstra, FEMS Executive Director continued “The FEMS journals have ambitious plans for 2026 and 2027. We are pioneering new ways to deliver the FEMS mission and support our community to publish with purpose. Stay tuned for more from us very soon.”
