Whether you are arriving early, staying longer, or simply looking to make the most of your time between sessions, Milan offers an inspiring mix of science, history, culture, and food. Step into the heart of a city renowned for its rich history, artistic heritage, and vibrant energy. Discover a world of architectural marvels and experience the unique charm that sets Milan apart.

Here is how to experience the best of the city while attending FEMS MICRO Milan 2025.

Where science meets the city
Few cities reflect the intersection of art, science, and innovation quite like Milan. Home to the renowned painter and scientist Leonardo da Vinci, Milan embodies the Renaissance spirit of scientific curiosity and discovery.

Visit the Museo Nazionale Scienza e Tecnologia, Italy’s largest science and technology museum, which features the most extensive permanent exhibition dedicated to da Vinci’s genius. Explore exciting displays such as the Space exhibition with lunar rocks, the Vega launcher, the Enrico Toti submarine, the Conte Biancamano ocean liner, locomotives, and airplanes.

Nearby, the Museo Civico di Storia Naturale di Milano offers a deep dive into the natural world through immersive exhibits on the evolution of life on Earth and the intricate relationship between organisms and their environments. The museum houses Italy’s largest collection of over 100 full-sized dioramas, giving visitors the chance to observe diverse and faraway ecosystems up close.

A rich cultural scene
Milan’s rich cultural scene offers plenty more to explore, especially after a full day of scientific sessions. Stroll through the city’s historic streets and admire its architectural masterpieces, such as the Duomo di Milano and Sforza Castle, which have stood as silent witnesses to centuries of scientific advancements.

The Brera Botanical Garden, hidden behind Palazzo Brera, is a peaceful green space in the city centre—ideal for a midday pause or a reflective walk after a day learning and networking. This historical garden is officially recognised as a museum.

In the evening, head to the Navigli District, where cobbled streets and historic canals create a picturesque setting for dinner and drinks. Enjoy aperitivo—Milan’s early evening ritual of light snacks and drinks—and continue your conversations from the day in a lively yet relaxed atmosphere.

A taste of Milan
Immerse yourself in Milan’s culinary scene. The area around the Milan Convention Centre (MiCo) offers a wide range of places to eat breakfast, lunch or dinner. Whether you are in the mood for traditional Italian dishes or something with a creative twist, these restaurants offer both flavour and atmosphere:

  • Dispensa Emilia: Everything at Dispensa Emilia revolves around tradition. It is a special place to spend unique moments, where the menu is built on carefully selected regional ingredients and the joy of gathering at the table to experience the best of Emilian cuisine.
  • Amabile: For more than 100 years, the Amabile family has passed down a passion for hospitality. Today, they are fourth-generation pizza chefs and restaurateurs, continuing to honour that deep-rooted tradition. The restaurant blends creativity and innovation while reinterpreting the traditional recipes of Neapolitan cuisine.
  • Sophia’s Restaurant: Sophia’s Restaurant preserves the original industrial architecture, creating a striking contrast between the historic structure and the modern interior design. Warm natural light filters in through the large windows that once illuminated the Settimana Enigmistica, gently colouring the rooms within the restaurant.
  • Osteria Caneva: Born in 1992 and run entirely by Chef Franco’s family, the restaurant combines new culinary ideas with beloved traditional dishes. It was founded on Franco’s vision to bring the typical cuisine of Sardinia—his place of origin—to Milan, offering guests a warm, family-style atmosphere.
