54° Congress of the Italian Society of Microbiology

It is with great enthusiasm that I invite you to participate in the 53rd Congress of the Italian Society of Microbiology , which will be held from 19 to 22 September 2025 , in the splendid setting of the University of Catania – Benedictine Monastery , on the Montevergine hill, the original nucleus of the city, in the historic centre.

The SIM 2025 Congress represents a precious opportunity to meet again, share knowledge, and build the future of microbiology. Our discipline thrives on connections, exchanges, and ideas that cross-fertilize and transform into new perspectives. Beyond scientific updates, this Congress will be a space for discussion, growth, and inspiration.

I chose Catania not only for its academic prestige, but because it perfectly embodies the spirit of science: a vibrant, dynamic city, constantly evolving , just like our field. Strolling its streets, immersing yourself in the charm of Sicilian Baroque, and being amazed by the view of Mount Etna on the horizon will be the ideal setting for addressing the future challenges of our discipline.

This year’s scientific program , in addition to the themes that have always characterized SIM, is enriched with key topics, ranging from the foundations of microbiology to new therapeutic and diagnostic scenarios. The main sessions and central round tables will focus on six major current topics:

• Evolution and clonal diversity in microorganisms

• Emerging themes in the pathophysiology of infectious diseases

• Enteric pathogens: new challenges and perspectives

• Antibiotic resistance: innovative strategies to combat it

• Transplants and infectious diseases: state of the art and future prospects

• Human microbiota: beyond the intestine

Alongside these, the Congress will open up further opportunities for in-depth study of two equally crucial topics: “The Future of Diagnostics in Infectious Diseases” and “New Mechanisms of Resistance,” which will be developed through selected contributions.

There will be four days of scientific insights, discussions and stimulating meetings , during which we will have the privilege of listening to the leading experts in the field and contributing together to the progress of our discipline.

The program will be enriched by opportunities for dynamic discussion , including oral presentations, flash communications, round tables, and workshops . These discussion spaces will offer participants the opportunity to share experiences and explore cutting-edge issues.

Making the event even more comprehensive will also be the contribution of cutting-edge companies in the microbiology and diagnostics sector , who will share their latest technological innovations, creating a bridge between research and application.

I look forward to seeing you in Catania for an experience that will go beyond science: four days of discussion, inspiration, and connection, immersed in a city that welcomes with the warmth and energy of great occasions.
