Bio-Archive Microbiologist: UK

At the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA), our diverse team of over 2,000 skilled and committed professionals together achieve a vital goal: to safeguard animal and plant health for the benefit our environment, our economy and for all of us who live here in the UK.

By joining us, you will be part of an organisation with a wide range of important priorities. In Science, we, conduct research into bacterial, viral and parasitic diseases and vaccines, facilitate international trade, identify and control endemic and exotic diseases, manage disease surveillance programmes and protect endangered wildlife.

We have an opportunity for an established scientist with a background in microbiology to curate and develop a robust archive of biological isolates and derived products. The management of the archive contents will involve characterisation of biological isolates using a range of molecular techniques, phenotypic approaches and Maldi TOF spectroscopy.  Audit and progression of the archive of microbiological isolates will require an eye for detail, good record keeping and the maintenance of supporting databases. The position will also involve working with colleagues across departments to advertise and promote the availability of the culture collections for academic research and commercial development.

You will be required to work within biological containment level 3 laboratories, to relevant H&S compliance standards and according to Agency Quality Management procedures.
