CARB-X Funding for New Antibiotics to Fight Drug-Resistant Bacteria

CARB-X is a non-profit partnership headquartered at Boston University, USA by two divisions of the US Department of Health and Human Services: the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority and the National Institute of Allergy and infectious Diseases.

Current funders are Wellcome Trust and BARDA. Other partners include the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard, the Massachusetts Biotechnology Council (MassBio), the California Life Sciences Institute (CLSI), and RTI International.

What does CARB-X fund?

The scope of CARB-X funding is restricted to projects that target drug-resistant bacteria highlighted on the ‘Antibiotic Resistant Threats in the United States’ report published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in 2013 or the Priority Bacterial Pathogens list published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in 2017 – with a priority on those pathogens deemed Serious or Urgent on the CDC list or Critical or High on the WHO list.

CARB-X supports early development of innovative products within the following categories in descending priority:

  • direct-acting therapeutics for Gram-negative infections
  • diagnostics
  • prevention (includes vaccines, microbiome, devices, etc.)
  • indirect acting therapeutics
  • direct-acting therapeutics for Gram-positive infections
  • antibiotics develoopment

Funding application

  1. Round 1 Expressions of Interest: 22-29 March 2018, 5 pm EST
    Round 1 applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) March 22, 2018 through March 29, 2018, 5pm EST to be considered for CARB-X funding. The EOI must be submitted using the on-line application tool. Only on-line applications will be considered.
  2. Round 2 Expressions of Interest: 1-8 June 2018, 5 pm EST
    Round 2 applicants must submit an Expression of Interest (EOI) June 1, 2018 through June 8, 2018, 5pm EST, to be considered for CARB-X funding. The EOI must be submitted using the on-line application tool. Only on-line applications will be considered.
