EMBO Workshop - The Impact Of Bacterial Infections On Human Cancer

26 – 29 October 2019 | Berlin, Germany

Pathogenic bacteria, in conjunction with other microbes, constantly affect our mucosal surfaces causing epithelial damage, particularly under chronic infection conditions.

The most serious potential outcome is cancer, and it is almost certainly no coincidence that epithelial carcinomas represent the most common malignancy.

While the causality between tumor viruses and human cancers is firmly established owing to the presence of viral transforming genes in the resulting cancer cells, no such clear genetic link has been seen for bacterial infections.

Yet, H. pylori, the major risk factor of gastric cancer, is a paradigm for numerous intriguing observations suggesting a much broader relationship between persistent bacterial infections, microbiota, inflammation, and human cancers.

Likewise, researchers have identified novel epidemiological relationships, bacteria-driven cancer-related signaling routes and genotoxins, and are beginning to understand the consequences of DNA damage and altered DNA damage repair, disturbed tissue homeostasis, chromosomal genetic and epigenetic changes, and the roles of chronic inflammation and the immune environment as carcinogenic conditions.

This first comprehensive meeting with outstanding cancer researchers, medical scientists, micro- and cell biologists, employing diverse pathogen-related cancer models, will be a milestone for elucidating this intriguing relationship from different perspectives.

Abstracts will be selected by the organizers based on the scientific quality of the research and its relevance to the workshop topic. A minimum of eight abstracts will be selected for a short talk. In addition, a committee composed of the Session Chairs will select a number of posters for presentation as a flash-talk.

ABSTRACT GUIDELINES

Abstracts should describe unpublished research and consist of a brief description of background, the experimental question, methods and a summary of the main findings.

Abstracts should be submitted online as single-spaced text. The main body of the abstract should not exceed 350 words.

Please indicate if you would like to present a short talk.

Abstract submission is not mandatory but if registrations exceed the number of available spaces, preference will be given to applicants who have submitted an abstract.

POSTER SPECIFICATIONS

Please bring one printed copy of your poster in portrait format, maximum size DIN A0 (height: 120 cm, width: 85 cm).

TRAVEL GRANTS

A limited number of travel grants are available for participants. The deadline for a travel grant application is August 1, 2019. Applications should include an abstract and motivation letter addressed to EMBO.INCA2019@mpiib-berlin.mpg.de.

Selection of awardees is handled directly by the organizer who will notify all eligible participants. More information is available at EMBO Travel Grants’ page.

CHILD CARE GRANT

EMBO Courses and Workshops offers grants to offset additional child care costs incurred by participants or speakers when participating at any EMBO Courses and Workshop funded meeting. Eligible costs include fees for a caregiver or child-care facility, travel costs for a caregiver, or travel costs for taking the child to the meeting etc. Please indicate on the registration form whether you would like to be considered for the grant. Please also describe how you intend to use the child care grant and specify the sum that you will need.

Notification of financial support will be provided before the official registration deadline.
