Post Doc Research Associate - Environmental Microbiology: USA

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s Environmental Assessment group is seeking a post-doctoral research associate to provide technical support to projects performing research in experimental and environmental microbiology, microbial characterization and dynamics, and microbial-based energy conversion processes. The successful candidate will have demonstrated expertise in the use of a systems-based biologic approach for the development and implementation of methods and tools used in the remediation of persistent organics, metals, and radionuclides from environmental matrices. Applicants are expected to have a working familiarity with the use and application of techniques for in situ characterization and measurement of activity in subsurface and groundwater environments, as well as an understanding of processes and controls for microbial energy conversion. The preferred candidate will have representative knowledge in analytical and molecular biology approaches (integrated-omics) for evaluating diverse sample compositions, as well as expected technical proficiency in experimental design, laboratory experimentation, and translation of laboratory and simulation results to impactful presentations and publications.

Accountabilities

The selected candidate will be accountable to the following:

  • The Environmental Assessment and Engineering Technical Group Manager for general staff performance and development, operational discipline (e.g., maintaining training qualifications, procedural compliance, safe operations), and promoting cooperation and teamwork within the technical group and project teams.
  • Project and Task Managers for performing assigned roles, following applicable project, field, and laboratory procedures, and performance of assigned tasks on time and within budget.

Minimum Qualifications

Candidates must have received a PhD within the past five years (60 months) or within the next 8 months from an accredited college or university.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Ability to design and execute experiments to develop and optimize microbiologic approaches and processes for application in surface and subsurface environments.
  • Develop and demonstrate systems-based approaches for environmental characterization, monitoring, and remediation.
  • Contribute to the production of technical proposals, project reports, scientific and technical products, and journal papers.
  • Contribute to the growth of new business development opportunities and capabilities for project and program teams.
  • Collaboration with multidisciplinary research staff, and develop and maintain internal and external scientific networks.
  • Mentoring of junior staff, students and seasonal interns.
  • Establish and maintain high technical quality in laboratory and field research processes and products with assurance towards safe work conditions.
  • Effective written and oral communication is required for this position as well as strong interpersonal skills and the ability to collaborate effectively on diverse, multidisciplinary teams.
