Post-doctoral researcher: Metagenomic probing of soil microbial cooperation
The Department of Geosciences of the University Tübingen is internationally recognized for its research in the environmental sciences, and is the lead institute in the TERRA Centre of Excellence. In this context, the Division of Geo-Biosphere Interactions jointly with the Soil Microbial Interactions Group at the Geo- and Environmental Center (GUZ) is announcing a position for a Post-doctoral researcher (f/m/d) (TV-L E13, 100%) starting earliest 01.01.2026 for a period of 2 years and 4 months, to lead the analysis of metagenomic and metatranscriptomic experimental data from soil microbiomes. The successful candidate will join the team of the EcoEnergeticS project (https://soilsystems.net/projects-partners/2-p9-ecoenergetics-ii/), which will elucidate the role of cooperative microbial interactions in soil biogeochemistry and bioenergetics. The project forms part of the multi-disciplinary SoilSystems Priority Program, involving 16 collaborating research institutions across Germany.
Your tasks:
• Bioinformatic analysis of long- and short-read metagenomic data from soil microbiomes
• Bioinformatic analysis of soil metatranscriptomes
• Genome-scale metabolic modelling of complex communities
• Contribute to design and supervision of laboratory-based soil experiments
• Coordinate sequencing with academic and commercial partners
• Prepare and present results through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at scientific meetings
Your profile:
• Dissertation in natural sciences or life sciences
• Strong experience in bioinformatic analysis of metagenomes, including developing new pipelines
• Profound knowledge of microbiology and microbial metabolism
• Experience in metatranscriptomics and/or genome-scale modelling is a distinct advantage, though a willingness to learn these methods is essential
• Fluency in spoken and written English
Persons with disabilities will be prioritized in case of equal suitability. We explicitly encourage women to apply. Applications consisting of a letter of motivation of up to 2 pages, CV, publication record, and relevant certificates should be sent as one single pdf file per e-mail to michaela.dippold@uni-tuebingen.de by the closing date of October 15th 2025.
