Researcher in Microbiology: Switzerland

The Food Microbiology research group is part of the interdisciplinary Institute of Food and Beverage Innovation. For a newly launched research project “Detection of Escherichia coli, coliforms and ATP”, we are looking for a qualified Researcher in Microbiology (100 %)

In your project, you will develop a new method to specifically detect E. coli, coliforms, and ATP from surfaces and in food samples, respectively, applying a novel technology that is based on chemiluminescence. Your work will combine classic microbiology, gene regulation aspects and method validation. You are expected to actively shape the direction of your project and to closely collaborate with the industrial partner and present your data at regular meetings and in scientific publications. The job offers the chance to get involved in an applied research project together with a young startup company which intends to develop pathogen detection kits in the fields of food and water safety as well as clinical diagnostics.

You require a completed PhD in biology or in a closely related field. Skills in food or medical microbiology are an asset. Theoretical and practical experience with reference methods in the area of bacteria detection and statistics will enhance your qualification. Furthermore, the successful candidate should be highly motivated, creative and curious. Fluent command of English (both written and spoken) is mandatory and knowledge in German or French is beneficial. The research will be carried out at the ZHAW in Wädenswil for a period of 24 months in time. The employment is temporary.
