The main aim of SMU is to promote the scientific study of microorganisms.

SMU members are working in the areas of microbial ecology, taxonomy, genetics, physiological and biochemical properties of microorganisms and their functioning in extreme environments and interaction with various nanoparticles. The research is also aimed at application at microbe-based biotechnologies, including bioremediation of various organic and inorganic pollutions, development of antimicrobial and antiviral drugs, probiotics for medical use, and microbial preparations for agriculture.

The Society members, especially PhD students and early career researchers, traditionally take a great part in science popularization activities and public engagement events.
