The Association of Microbiologists of Bosnia and Herzegovina (UMBIH) was founded in 2002 with the aims to expand and advance the professional and academic endeavors in microbiology. The Association is a professional, non-governmental organization that has 72 members. The UMBIH is a member of numerous international organizations, including the International Federation of Infection Control (IFIC), the International Society of Chemotherapy (ISC) and the Federation of European Microbiological Societies (FEMS). The Association members are representatives of Bosnia and Herzegovina and are involved in numerous committees and networks affiliated with the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) and World Health Organisation.

UMBIH is actively involved in addressing and solving all current diagnostic and epidemiological problems in Bosnia and its surrounding countries, and its special fields of action are infection control within health institutions, antimicrobial resistance, methods in microbiology, zoonotic diseases, sexually transmitted diseases and emerging and reemerging pathogens.
