FEMS Expert: Professor Dr Franz Narberhaus

member of EAM

Franz Narberhaus studied Biology at the University of Göttingen, Germany, and received his PhD degree with Gerhard Gottschalk and Hubert Bahl in 1992. He was a postdoc with Sydney Kustu at the University of California, Berkeley and a group leader with Hauke Hennecke at the ETH Zürich, Switzerland. Since 2004, he is full professor at the Ruhr University Bochum, Germany.

Franz has always been fascinated by bacterial gene regulation and adaptation processes to environmental conditions. He focuses on mechanisms of posttranscriptional regulation (regulatory RNAs, proteolysis). He is also interested in the biosynthesis of unusual bacterial phospholipids, in particular in plant pathogenic bacteria.

From 2007 to 2013, Franz Narberhaus coordinated a national research program on ‘Sensory and Regulatory RNAs in Prokaryotes’. He serves on the editorial board of several journals. Since 2012, he is elected member of the DFG review board “Microbiology, Virology and Immunology”, since 2016 as speaker of the panel.
