Fighting AMR
Antimicrobial Resistance Resources - The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), United Nations
The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Antimicrobial drugs play a critical role in the treatment of diseases, their use is essential to protect both human and animal health. However, antimicrobials are often misused for treatment and prevention of diseases in livestock sector, aquaculture as well as crop production. These actions are often associated with the potential risk of emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistant micro-organisms.
The FAO has produced a substantial body of resources for those in farming, agriculture, and the food industry to help address the causes and prevention of AMR:
Joint FAO/WHO Expert Meeting in collaboration with OIE on Foodborne Antimicrobial Resistance: Role of the Environment, Crops and Biocides
There is clear scientific evidence that foods of plant origin may serve as a vehicle of foodborne exposure to antimicrobial-resistant bacteria…
Prudent and efficient use of antimicrobials in pigs and poultry
This manual will contribute to addressing the challenge of AMR by promoting the prevention of infections and the prudent use of antibiotics in the pig and poultry sectors…
Carryover in feed and transfer from feed to food of unavoidable and unintended residues of approved
Carryover of veterinary drug residues in feed or transfer to food must be properly managed to avoid contaminated feed to harm animal or render food unsafe for human consumption…
Antimicrobial movement from agricultural areas to the environment: The missing link. A role for nuclear techniques
This paper will provide alternative screening methods useful for environmental samples and surveillance approaches in planning such screening efforts…
Monitoring and evaluation of the global action plan on antimicrobial resistance: framework and recommended indicators
This framework for Monitoring an evaluation of the GAP aims to be robust and practical—to provide a manageable system that can facilitate the generation, collection and analysis of standardized data to assess the success of the GAP…
