Assistant professor in Microbiome research (postdoc): Netherlands

As a junior faculty applicant researcher, you will build own research programs in microbiome research that will, at least in part, leverage the extensive study populations, biological samples, and genetic/genomic data available within EXPOSOME. The new faculty will develop collaborations with existing faculty who have expertise in microbiomics, statistics, bioinformatics, epidemiology, genetic epidemiology, and genomics of complex human diseases. The successful candidate will engage in teaching students and post-doctoral fellows and supervising laboratory technicians. Academic appointment as Assistant Professor rank at the UMCU/UU will be commensurate with the applicant’s experience.

Department
The position is based in the research groups of Prof. Rob Willems at the Department of Medical Microbiology of the University Medical Center Utrecht (UMCU). This department is part of the recently established Utrecht Exposome hub within Utrecht Life Sciences (https://exposome.sites.uu.nl). The department of Medical Microbiology is responsible for infectious disease diagnostics (bacteriology, virology, serology, mycology and parasitology), clinical microbiological consultancy, and infection prevention at the University Medical Center Utrecht and the department has an important role in teaching and training of medical doctors, PhD and undergraduate students. Further research themes within the Department of Medical Microbiology include comparative and functional genomics to identify and characterize genes that contribute to the success of antibiotic-resistant opportunistic pathogens that frequently colonize and infect hospitalized patients.

Profile
You hold a PhD in biology and have experience in microbiome research. You have an established record of independent research, and a strong first author publication record in peer-reviewed journals. You have strong collaboration skills, including the ability to develop productive interactions with researchers within and outside the institute including at other national and international centers. The maximum salary for this position (89-100%) is € 5.785,00 gross per month based on full-time employment (work week 36 hours). This job is based on a temporary position for 4 years with the possibility of a permanent position. In addition, we offer an annual benefit of 8.3%, holiday allowance, travel expenses and career opportunities. The terms of employment are in accordance with the Cao University Medical Centers (UMC).
