Postdoc on bacterial cell division and multicellular development: UK

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Postdoctoral Researcher to join the Laboratory of Dr Susan Schlimpert in the Department of Molecular Microbiology at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK to investigate bacterial cell division and multicellular development.

About the John Innes Centre:

The John Innes Centre is an independent, international centre of excellence in plant and microbial genetics. We nurture a creative, curiosity-led approach to answering fundamental questions in bioscience, and translate that knowledge into societal benefits.

Our employees enjoy access to state-of-the-art technology and a diverse range of specialist training opportunities, including support for leadership and management. Click here to find out more about working at the John Innes Centre.

About the Schlimpert Group:

The Schlimpert lab studies the molecular and cell biological mechanisms involved in the control of multicellular development in the antibiotic-producing genus of bacteria Streptomyces. Our approach focuses on key regulatory and structural proteins involved in cell division, chromosome segregation and cell differentiation. In doing so, we exploit a broad range of techniques ranging from cell biology, global ‘omics’ approaches such as RNA-seq and ChIP-seq, genetics, biochemistry and structural biology.

The role:

Working as part of a team led by Dr Susan Schlimpert, you will undertake independent and innovative research to support and accelerate progress in ongoing projects in the lab. You will apply genetic, biochemical and cell biological approaches to characterise the role of novel proteins involved in cell division and cellular differentiation in Streptomyces.

The ideal candidate:

The candidate should hold a PhD in molecular microbiology and have demonstrated expertise in microbiology, molecular biology, bacterial cell biology and/or biochemistry. Excellent oral and written communication is required.

The appointment is for 1 year initially – which offers an ideal opportunity for somebody who is looking for a short-term appointment to support ongoing projects in the lab and gain extra experience. Or for a motivated recent PhD graduate who wishes to develop an independent project and to apply for a postdoctoral fellowship with support from the host lab. Informal enquiries about potential projects and project ideas are welcome.

Additional information:

Interviews will be held at the end of February/beginning of March 2022. Please apply by submitting a cover letter, a CV, list of publications and contact details for at least 2 references.
