The position is affiliated with the research project The Nansen Legacy (nansenlegacy). The Nansen Legacy is the Norwegian Arctic research community’s joint effort to establish a holistic understanding of a changing marine Arctic climate and ecosystem. It is a collaborative project between ten Norwegian research institutions and will run from 2018-2023. Activities in the project will include international cooperation, and several cruises with the new, ice-going research vessel Kronprins Haakon. The principal area of research is under the Nansen legacy cross cutting activity on “Technology and methods development (RA-C)”.

The successful candidate will be part of the Nansen legacy team working across several research groups at IMR and partner institutions. The main task for the postdoc will be to combine information from several instruments, including broad-band echosounders and drop sondes, vessel mounted echo sounders and net sampling, and methods to combine the data from these instruments into indices of abundance and distribution of macro zooplankton. The candidate will be responsible for data collection at sea, working up data and samples and provide data products on biomass and species composition for the Nansen legacy project. In addition to the core tasks, the candidate is expected to collaborate across the Nansen legacy project.

Requirements

• The candidate must hold a doctoral degree or equivalent education in a relevant field, e.g. biology, informatics, physics, applied mathematics, or statistics. Further, the candidate should have:
• Demonstrated capability of producing scientific publications;
• Experience in data analysis and statistics;
• Experience in computer programming (e.g. Python or R);
• Good command of the English language, both spoken and written.

Other desired factors are:

• Fisheries acoustics;
• Marine ecology and plankton ecology;
• Statistical sampling methods and survey design;
• Field work experience, preferably from ocean going research vessels;
• Ability to work independently and in collaboration with others;
• The working language at IMR is Norwegian. A working knowledge of the Norwegian language will be advantageous, and language training will be offered if necessary.
