Postdoctoral Researcher – Bacteriology: Ireland

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full time, fixed term position as a Postdoctoral Researcher with the Discipline of Bacteriology at the National University of Ireland, Galway. This position is available from July 1st 2018 to contract end date of June 30th 2020. The Discipline of Bacteriology contributes to teaching undergraduate students in medicine, nursing, midwifery and health sciences. Research is focused on antimicrobial-resistance in particular in the Enterobacteriaceae.

Job Description:  

The successful candidate will contribute to enhancing the research and outreach programmes of the Discipline of Bacteriology, the Antimicrobial Resistance and Microbial Ecology Group and the Centre for Health from Environment, Ryan Institute NUI Galway.

Duties:

The successful candidate will be responsible for:

  •  Contributing to the management of the One Health European Joint Programme at NUI Galway.
  •  Developing the ongoing research programme of the Antimicrobial Resistance and Microbial Ecology (ARME) Group.
  •  Assisting with the management and coordination of the Centre for Health from Environment, NUI Galway.
  • Training and supervision of new members of the ARME group,
  •  Ongoing development of the outreach programme of the ARME group, the Discipline of Bacteriology and the Centre for Health from Environment.

Qualifications/Skills required:

  • Ph.D. in Microbiology.
  • Prior experience as a postdoctoral researcher.
  • Relevant international publications relating to antimicrobial resistance.
  • Experience of project management and working on interdisciplinary projects.
  • Experience of environmental sample collection and microbiological processing.
  • Competent in routine microbiological and molecular biology methods.
  • Proven track record in publication and presentation of research findings.
  • Full Irish drivers licence.
  • Engagement with external funding applications in relevant areas. 

Essential Requirements:

  • Ph.D. in Microbiology.
  • Evidence of prior experience as a postdoctoral researcher.
  • Relevant international publications relating to antimicrobial resistance.
  • Demonstrable experience of project management and working on interdisciplinary projects.
  • Track record of environmental sample collection and microbiological processing.
  • Evidence of competency in routine microbiological and molecular biology methods.
  • Proven track record in publication and presentation of research findings.
  • Full Irish drivers licence.
  • Evidence of engagement with external funding applications in relevant areas.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Experience of high throughput sequencing technologies.
  • Experience of analysis of high throughput/whole genome sequence data.
  • Experience of outreach activities.
  • Good interpersonal and organisational skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Start date: Position is available from July 1st 2018.
