Research assistant in Microbial Systems and Synthetic Biology: Austria
The Swammerdam Institute for Life Sciences (SILS) is one of the largest institutes of the Faculty of Science. The research group of Bacterial cell biology & Physiology investigates, using a combination of theoretical and experimental approaches, how microorganisms with contrasting lifestyles, namely photoautotrophs and chemoheterotrophs, have evolved to exploit and respond to different environments. We aim to use this knowledge in sustainable biotechnological applications. In this context we are seeking for a Research assistant to help run the laboratory and provide assistance on the active research lines of MMP while assisting in the practical training of students from different academic levels.
Job description
The successful candidate will be entrusted with the daily management and running of the laboratory, and with the maintenance and handling of the strain collection and other laboratory equipment. You will be performing laboratory work in the fields of molecular biology, analytical chemistry and biochemistry and will also carry-out microbial (photo)cultivations in highly controlled bioreactors using organisms such as Cyanobacteria and Lactic Acid Bacteria, amongst others. Furthermore, you will be expected to assist in the practical component of different educational activities, such as BSc. and MSc. internship projects and practical courses.
Requirements
If you are the research assistant we are looking for, you:
- have a degree in Higher Professional Education (hbo/hlo) or University;
- have theoretical and practical knowledge on at least two of the fields listed above in the job description;
- have at least 1 year of experience in the laboratory;
- are fluent in English and Dutch both written and spoken. Please do not respond if you are not fluent in Dutch too;
- have affinity for programming languages R and/or python is desired but not a requisite

Appointment
The appointment will be on a temporary basis for a period of one year to prove yourself to be qualified for the position. After a positive satisfactory evaluation which proves that you are, a permanent contract will be offered. Based on a full-time appointment (38 hours per week) the gross monthly salary will range from €2,161 to €2,917 (scale 7), depending on relevant work experience. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities is applicable.
