Research Associate & Lab Manager Positions in Host-Microbe Cell Biology: USA

The Belin lab is a research group at the Carnegie Institution’s Embryology Department, located on the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus in Baltimore, MD. We seek one research scientist and one lab manager to facilitate our research on the molecular mechanisms of environmental host-microbe interactions. Both positions are full-time with competitive salary and benefit packages and flexible start dates.

The selected candidates will be joining a small, highly collegial laboratory within a large and vibrant research community, with many opportunities to present their work in departments throughout Johns Hopkins and Carnegie. Belin lab members have access to facilities and equipment across both institutes, including a suite of newly installed growth chambers, mass spec, and state-of-the-art super-resolution microscopes. Dr. Belin is committed to the professional development of all hires, with opportunities available to participate in grant writing, mentorship, and science communication activities. Depending upon funding availability, hires also may have opportunities to attend and present their research at conferences.

Research Associate Qualifications and Duties:

Applicants must have a M.S. degree or higher in the life sciences or a related discipline with at least 1 year of full-time post-graduate research experience, or a B.S. degree with at least 3 years of full-time post-graduate experience. Expertise in plant cultivation, small molecule analysis, quantitative microscopy, or bacterial genetics in non-model bacteria is desirable. Applicants must have excellent organizational skills and proficiency with record-keeping and scientific presentations.

Core job duties will include bench and computational work on independent projects, in addition to providing research support for other lab members as needed. Candidates may be expected to change their research focus based on the labs’ current funding and research priorities, at the discretion of Dr. Belin. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Preparing research results for publications or presentations
  • Contributing to the preparation of research grants
  • Training and mentoring junior research scientists
  • Coordinating collaborations with external research groups
  • Contributing to duties described below for the Lab Manager position when assistance is required
  • Ensuring a safe, supportive, and inclusive lab environment

Lab Manager Qualifications and Duties:

Applicants must have a B.S. degree in the life sciences or a related discipline and exceptional organizational and communication skills. Candidates also must be reliable and available to work within standard 9 am – 5 pm weekday hours. Specific responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:

  • Sterilizing glassware, consumables, and reagents
  • Preparing common lab stocks including bacterial plates and buffers
  • Ordering and stocking lab supplies and equipment
  • Performing basic equipment maintenance, managing service contracts, and coordinating technician visits
  • Coordinating with other Embryology lab managers and department personnel on management of shared department facilities
  • Maintaining lab databases including online protocols, bacterial strain and plasmid libraries, and seed stocks
  • Long-term cultivation of plants in grow tents and growth chambers
  • Helping Dr. Belin to organize social activities for the lab and lab guests
  • Working with Dr. Belin to develop and ensure compliance with lab safety protocols and policies
  • Ensuring a safe, supportive, and inclusive lab environment

Experience in some of the above activities is highly desirable. Limited work on research projects may be possible, depending on the background and interest of the candidate.
