Senior Scientist-Research Network Chemistry Meets Microbiology: Austria

A new joint microbiome facility will be established by the University of Vienna (UV) and the Medical University of Vienna (MUV). The facility will be located at the campus of the general hospital of Vienna (AKH). We are searching for a Senior Scientist with outstanding expertise in wet-lab and bioinformatic next-generation-sequencing methods relevant to the study of complex microbial communities.

The position is currently limited to 1 year with the possibility of subsequent unlimited employment.

As a Senior Scientist, the candidate will contribute to the establishment of the facility and day-to-day research as well as technical developments at the Joint Microbiome Facility of the Medical University of Vienna and the University of Vienna. A major responsibility will be:

(i) communication with users to facilitate microbiome projects including study design, sample management, first (e.g. sequencing, classification, alpha/beta-diversity) and second level (e.g. correlation with user metadata) analyses and interpretation of microbiome data,

(ii) to coordinate and monitor the design, implementation and update of bioinformatics pipelines and customized bioinformatics analyses in the area of microbiome research and diagnostics, and

(iii) being a resource for knowledge on emerging methods and implementing seminars to teach new methods to users of the facility. The successful applicant will also communicate with collaborating sequencing centers to stay on top of methodological developments and be involved in the acquisition of national and international grants as well as publication of results in international peer-reviewed journals.

The Senior Scientist will also be expected to ensure timely processing and reporting of microbiome data to users as well as prepare finance and financial reporting.
We invite applicants to submit their curriculum vitae, letter of intent and diplomas.

Eligibility criteria

Successful candidates must have a doctoral degree in microbiology or a related discipline, at least 2 years of relevant post-doc research experience, and a track record of publications in international peer-reviewed journals. A comprehensive knowledge of state-of-the-art methods in microbiome analysis is required, including expertise in the following areas:

• experience in laboratory techniques for microbiome research and molecular microbiology
• experience with next-generation sequencing methods (such as Illumina, PacBio, Min-Ion/GridIon), including nucleic acids extraction and preparation for sequencing
• experience processing and analyzing data produced from massively-parallel sequencing including amplicon, shotgun metagenomics and metatranscriptomic datasets
• experience using a computational cluster
• experience preparing scientific manuscripts and presenting scientific results at international scientific conferences.

A strong background in microbiology / microbial communities / microbial ecology / cooperation with researchers involved in clinical studies is preferred.
