The EAM is seeking a new President

The European Academy of Microbiology (EAM) is looking for a new President, a passionate and committed individual who will contribute their expertise, vision, and leadership to the group. The term will officially start on 1 January 2026.

The EAM Executive Board consists of the President, Secretary General, FEMS President and 5 Executive Board (EB) Members. It is responsible for the activities of EAM and in ensuring that EAM delivers on its mission.

The EAM president leads the academic and administrative activities of EAM. The EAM Board works as an international and multicultural team, where it contributes in close liaison with FEMS to the promotion and recognition of excellence in microbiology across Europe. 

It is an exciting time to join the EAM Board, as insights from the EAM 2030 Committee set up by immediate past president, Jorg Vogel, and survey insights from outgoing President Ken Timmis, have helped to refresh the EAM strategy and impact for the microbiology community. The EAM Board is in the process of consolidating these efforts and setting the delivery plan for the future.  

Role and Responsibilities:

  • The President is responsible for chairing the EB, a sub-committee of FEMS, and ensures the necessary business of the EAM is carried out effectively in pursuit of its mission and strategic aims, aligned with the long-term strategy of FEMS.
  • Working with the Secretary General, the President ensures that the committee acts in accordance with its own Terms of Reference, FEMS Articles of Association and Bylaws, and partners with FEMS to continue to professionalize its governance policy.
  • The President helps oversee the process by which new fellows are nominated and elected to the Academy together with the Secretary General, to ensure it can meet its strategic responsibilities and to ensure representation across all microbiological communities.

Term of office:

The term of office is for 3 years, from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2028.

  • A letter of motivation highlighting why you are applying for the role and how your skills and experience match the vacancy description and contribute to the EAM. (500 word limit)
  • The names of 2 EAM Fellows who support their candidacy (The endorsing EAM Fellows should not come from the candidate’s country). 

Shortlisted candidates will be presented to the EAM Fellows to vote on which candidate will become the next EAM President.
