About
FEMS advances the microbiology community through magnifying microbial impact. We are a global network connecting over 50 Member Societies from 40 countries and representing more than 30,000 individual microbiologists. As a UK-registered charity and not-for-profit organisation, FEMS is led by passionate microbiologists who volunteer their time, and supported by a professional team based in the Netherlands.
Our activities are designed to champion science and deliver impact. FEMS fosters scientific communities and creates space for microbiologists to convene in person, online, and through our journals. FEMS uplifts the next generation of microbiologists through meetings, webinars, mentoring, summer schools, grants, and more.
In 2024, FEMS celebrated its 50th anniversary, marking five decades of bringing microbiologists together across borders and disciplines. Today, it continues to strengthen connections across the global microbiology community, shaping the future of the field and supporting the scientists who drive it forward.
Strategic framework
Our strategic aim is magnifying microbial impact in Europe and beyond. FEMS believes in the power of microbiology for bettering the world we live in. Our mission is to create real impact for microbiologists and empower the FEMS Member Societies to serve the scientific community.
All but one of the not-for-profit FEMS journals are fully open access (OA), with one journal, FEMS Microbiology Letters, offering free-to-publish and OA options. Open access is key to supporting the FEMS mission of disseminating high quality research as widely as possible: when high quality, peer reviewed sound science is open access, anyone, anywhere in the world with an internet connection, can read it.
