Our main interest is the transformation of organic matter in natural environments, especially lakes and lake sediments. We look at the physiology of bacteria and archaea which participate in biomass transformation and the energetic implications of their activities, and study the biochemistry of comparably stable natural or synthetic organic compounds such as aromatic compounds, ketones, or hydrocarbons.
