Prof Joerg Overmann’s research interests lie in targeting different bacterial groups of environmental relevance (Sphingomonadaceae, Roseobacter clade, soil Acidobacteria), the population structure and evolutionary processes that underlie niche separation and speciation of bacteria employing comparative genomics, high throughput metagenomics and innovative cultivation-based approaches.

Phototrophic consortia serve as models to understand the evolution, ecophysiology, and the molecular basis of heterologous bacterial multicellularity. Joerg’s laboratory are taking advantage of high-throughput cultivation and screening techniques to look for new, bioactive compounds that can be used in a variety of bioeconomic sectors.
