Bad Bugs Bookclub

First established in 2009, the Bad Bugs Bookclub, led by Joanna Verran from the Manchester Metropolitan University, aims to engage both scientists and non-scientists with the aim to talk about infectious disease.

The Bookclub meets approximately 4-5 times each year in-person but also via zoom to facilitate interesting discussions! No science background is required to join, just an interest to learn more!

Find more about the Bad Bugs Bookclub in the FEMS Microbiology Letters paper “Using fiction to engage audiences with infectious disease: the effect of the coronavirus pandemic on participation in the Bad Bugs Bookclub

Some of the most recent books discussed in the Bookclub involve:

  • The Pull of the Stars by Emma Donoghue
  • Moloka’I by Alan Brennert
  • The Waiting Rooms by Eve Smith
