PostDoc positions

Post Doctoral Researcher, Freshwater Ecology: Finland

The Research Unit of Ecology & Genetics, University of Oulu, Finland, has an opening for an 8-month post doctoral position in the project Source stream protection from forest practices: what are the costs and benefits, and how best to do it? The project is a part of the ERA-NET COFUND WATERWORKS 2015 program and is based on collaboration between Finnish, Swedish and Canadian partners.

The project aims to estimate the ecological, hydrological and water quality consequences of different management scenarios (e.g., riparian buffers). We aim to achieve this by augmenting the available data for small stream responses to forest management across varied landscapes, using comparisons of harvested versus unharvested sites, with and without riparian reserves, particularly in the upmost headwater streams. The project uses several freshwater organism groups and is partly experimental, including both mesocosm and field experiments, complemented with broad-scale correlative surveys.

We are looking for an individual keen to work both in the laboratory and in the field. We expect a firm background in freshwater ecology, good knowledge on numerical ecology and statistical modeling, and fluent oral and written English skills. Previous experience on stream ecosystems is considered highly beneficial, as is also any experience on microbial ecology and molecular techniques. The candidate should have PhD in a relevant field (ecology, limnology) and demonstrable qualifications in research (publications in international journals). In addition to conducting research in his/her own project, the post doc is expected to contribute to thesis supervision and teaching at all levels. The post doc will work in an international group of researchers at different career stages, all focusing on different aspects of community ecology of stream ecosystems (https://streamecology.wordpress.com/).

The salary is based on the levels 5 – 6 of the demand level chart for university-level teaching and research staff of Finnish universities. In addition, a salary component based on personal work performance will be paid (maximum of 50 % of the job-specific component). The salary will thus be roughly 3,400 – 3,900 € per month, depending on the appointee’s qualifications and experience.

Applications, together with all relevant enclosures, should be submitted electronically by 3.6 2019 at 23:59 (Finnish local time).

The application should include a brief outline (1 – 2 pages) of research interests, a CV (according to the guidelines of Finnish National Board of Research Integrity: https://www.tenk.fi/en/template-researchers-curriculum-vitae) with the names and contact details of 2 – 3 referees, and copies of relevant official exam documents.

The position is filled as of 1.7.2019 or as soon as possible thereafter. A trial period of 4 months is applied in the position.
