Prof Nicola Stanley-Wall studied for her PhD at the John Innes Centre in Norwich, UK. During this time she was involved in analysing the twin arginine transport pathway in Escherichia coli. Following this she moved to the University of California, Los Angeles and started working on Bacillus subtilis biofilm formation. Part of her work was funded by an EMBO long term fellowship.

In 2005 she moved to the University of Dundee to establish her independent research career and has remained there since. Nicola is a strong advocate for engaging the public in research and enjoys thinking about and responding to the varied questions children and adults ask about how biofilms form.
