Meet Research and Training Grantee Ivica Dimkić
29-01-21
Research and Training Grants assist early career scientists in pursuing research and training at a European host institution in a country other than their own country of residence
Ivica Dimkić, Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Biology, University of Belgrade, Serbia
Host lab: Dr Vittorio Venturi, Bacteriology and Plant Bacteriology, International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Trieste, Italy
Member Society: Serbian society for Microbiology
Thanks to the FEMS grant, I had the opportunity to visit Dr Vittorio Venturi’s lab. Environmentally friendly alternatives for controlling plant diseases and pests are now the focus for many researchers. The results obtained by this training visit involve the understanding of the molecular mechanisms of biological control by bacterial strains with antimicrobial activity as well as investigating the practical application of bacterial strains in crop protection. As predicted steps in the research, we identified the strains which exhibited the strongest antagonistic effects against plant phytopathogens, which also were efficient in biofertilization experiments on selected crop plants, regarding pre-planting seed protection.
FEMS grants are an excellent opportunity for the mobility of researchers to ensure the transfer of knowledge, best practices and experiences between professionals in the field as well as the transfer of knowledge between PhD students.”
