Out of the FEMS Research Grantees, the European Society of Clinical Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (ESCMID) annually selects one grantee for an additional award of € 1 000, the FEMS-ESCMID Awardee. Reciprocally, FEMS will provide such additional award to one grantee, the ESCMID-FEMS Awardee. These joint fellowships will receive appropriate publicity through both organizations.
Mycobacteria show a high degree of intrinsic resistance to most antibiotics and chemotherapeutic agents. The low permeability of the mycobacterial cell wall, with its unusual structure, is now known to be a major factor in this resistance.
